You are giving up the good stuff
You are giving in the good stuff;
in pursuit of something better.
Swap the whisky for lager,
meat for the pulses,
Remove the sugar from your tea
and search for sweetness elsewhere.
Write and read
and write some more.
Hope to say something
that repays the frugal now.
Flog furniture,
Books can become a makeshift nightstand,
Which sits beside your bed,
on a bare wooden floor.
Release the love and cleanse the hate,
Free up the storage in your mind,
like emptying a hard drive,
Making room for the other.
Sacrifice precious sleep.
a 7pm americano is a choice,
Stretch the night out long
like pastry on the worktop.
Like a negotiation with god,
rest at 2 and rise at 6,
to be back staring at the sunrise,
ready to give it another go.
What is the use in fantasy,
When you have to wake up?
Let slumber become the bore,
because you are living your dreams.
You are giving up the good stuff,
in pursuit of something better.
